Chinese President Xi Jinping Stresses Enhanced Political and Security Cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Call at BRICS Summit

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called for an expedited expansion of the BRICS coalition, coupled with a heightened commitment to strengthening political and security collaboration among the group’s member nations.

Xi Jinping, who was notably absent from the BRICS Business Forum on the preceding day, used the Summit on Wednesday to underline the necessity of fostering increased political and security cooperation. He pointedly remarked that the specter of a Cold War mindset continues to loom over global dynamics, exacerbating the geopolitical tensions of our times.

Xi further asserted that the privilege of development should not be exclusive, emphasizing his support for the inclusion of additional nations into the BRICS fold. He articulated, “I am heartened by the enthusiasm shown by poorer countries for BRICS collaboration. Numerous nations have expressed interest in joining… We must expedite the process of expanding BRICS to embrace more nations.”

In his address, Xi advocated for a commitment to peaceful development and the consolidation of the BRICS strategic partnership. He emphasized the potential of mechanisms like the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in fostering collaboration among member nations and in collectively addressing matters of core interest, both internationally and regionally.

The Chinese President highlighted the importance of mediating in critical issues, striving for political resolutions and de-escalation. This stance was echoed by his call for joint action in the emerging realm of artificial intelligence (AI). He disclosed that the BRICS nations had reached an accord to establish an AI Study Group. He stated, “”We must enable the study group to effectively fulfil its role, fostering broader AI cooperation through increased information exchange and technological partnership.”

Xi Jinping’s engagement also entailed a concerted push for risk mitigation through the establishment of an international framework for participation. Additionally, he championed the creation of AI governance standards to ensure the safety, reliability, and fairness of AI technologies.

Economically, Xi voiced the imperative of deepening business and financial cooperation among the BRICS countries to foster shared growth. He acknowledged the fragile state of global economic recovery and the disproportionate challenges faced by developing nations, advocating for an inclusive development model.

Xi’s address resounded with a call for unity in the face of decoupling, supply chain disruptions, and economic pressures. He steered focus towards practical cooperation in domains such as the digital economy, green development, and supply chain enhancement. Moreover, he unveiled China’s intention to launch a China-BRICS Science and Innovation Incubation Park for the New Era, a gesture aimed at propelling innovation within the BRICS bloc.

Comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the BRICS coalition encapsulates more than 40% of the global population and a significant share of GDP and trade. The summit also featured the presence of leaders from Africa and the Middle East, many of whom expressed aspirations to join BRICS, an issue accorded prominence in the summit’s agenda.
