Shubh’s India Tour Cancelled Amid Controversy

The India-Canada tension has further intensified due to the controversy surrounding Canadian-Punjabi singer and rapper Shubhneet Singh, popularly known as Shubh. The renowned artist, who gained fame with hit songs like Elevated, OG, and Cheques, is now facing backlash over his alleged support for Khalistan, a contentious issue straining relations between India and Canada.

The Cancellation of Shubh’s India Tour

Shubhneet was scheduled to embark on his tour, visiting cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad over the next two months. However, the tour came to an abrupt halt as Ticketing platform BookMyShow announced its cancellation. They issued a statement saying, “Singer Shubhneet Singh’s Still Rollin Tour for India stands cancelled.” The platform also assured customers of a complete refund within 7-10 working days.

Electronics brand boAt withdrew its sponsorship of Shubhneet tour. In a statement, boAt emphasized its commitment to being a “true Indian brand” and cited concerns regarding Shubh’s past remarks as the reason for the withdrawal.

Controversial Social Media Posts

The controversy around Shubhneet erupted earlier this year when he posted a distorted map of India on his Instagram account. Notably, the map omitted Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, with the caption “Pray for Punjab.” This action drew widespread criticism on social media, where users accused Shubh of supporting the Khalistani agenda. He later removed the map but retained the “Pray for Punjab” message.

BJYM’s Protest and Allegations

The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, played a pivotal role in opposing Shubh’s India concert. They removed promotional posters and urged the Mumbai police to register an FIR against Shubhneet for “waging war against the Government of India and posting anti-government posts.”

The BJYM firmly stated that there was no place for Khalistan supporters in India, asserting, “We won’t let Canadian singer Shubh perform on the auspicious land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mumbai.” They accused Shubh of openly supporting the Khalistani agenda and influencing Indian youth to do the same.

Celebrity Unfollows on Social Media

The controversy also impacted Shubh’s social media presence, with prominent Indian cricketers such as Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya unfollowing him on Instagram. This move signaled their disapproval of Shubh’s alleged support for Khalistan.

The Larger Diplomatic Context

This controversy involving Shubh coincides with a broader diplomatic standoff between India and Canada surrounding the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The tension escalated when Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, suggested a potential link between Indian government agents and the assassination of Nijjar.

Trudeau’s government took swift action, expelling an Indian diplomat and collaborating with international allies on the Nijjar case. In response, India labeled the allegations as “absurd” and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat, exacerbating the already strained relations between the two nations.

In conclusion, Shubh’s India tour cancellation and the controversy surrounding his alleged support for Khalistan have further exacerbated the India-Canada tension. This incident highlights the delicate nature of international relations and the potential for cultural and political controversies to impact diplomatic ties.
