Key Highlights

  1. Inauguration and Route: PM Modi inaugurated the 17-kilometer priority section, stretching from Sahibabad to Duhai Depot, on October 20. This section includes five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot. Passenger operations will begin on October 21, and the entire 82.15-kilometer corridor is anticipated to be fully operational by June 2025.
  2. Train Naming: The RRTS trains have been named ‘Namo Bharat’ by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The term ‘Namo’ is a shortened version of Prime Minister Modi’s name, emphasizing their significance in India’s transportation history.
  3. Train Features: Each RRTS train consists of six coaches, with one coach reserved for women. Seats are serially numbered, and other coaches include reserved seating for specially-abled individuals and senior citizens.
  4. State-of-the-Art Mobility Solution: The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is being developed at a cost exceeding ₹30,000 crore. It will connect Delhi and Meerut, reducing travel time to less than an hour while passing through key urban centers, including Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar. The RRTS is hailed as a state-of-the-art regional mobility solution on par with the best in the world.
  5. Fare Structure: For a one-way journey on the priority section from Sahibabad to Duhai Depot, the fare is set at ₹50, while the premium class coach ticket costs ₹100.
  6. Safety Features: RRTS trains incorporate advanced safety measures, including CCTV cameras, an emergency door-opening mechanism, and a direct communication button to contact the train operator. Additionally, the baggage scanning system at RRTS stations utilizes AI-powered technology to identify restricted or prohibited items.
  7. Previous Name: Initially, these trains were named ‘RAPIDX’ before being renamed ‘Namo Bharat’.

The foundation stone for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor was laid by PM Modi on March 8, 2019, marking the beginning of this ambitious project. The development of this corridor is part of the broader Delhi-Meerut RRTS, aiming to provide a high-speed, intercity commuting option to residents of the NCR. The entire project is expected to transform the region’s connectivity and reduce travel times drastically.

RapidX Trains

As part of this monumental project, the RapidX trains are set to revolutionize regional travel in India. These trains will operate at a remarkable speed of 160 kilometers per hour, ensuring quick and efficient commuting. Commuters can expect a train every 15 minutes, further enhancing accessibility and convenience.

Each RapidX train consists of six coaches, with one exclusively reserved for women. Notably, the trains come equipped with several commuter-centric features, including 2×2 transverse seating, luggage racks, CCTV cameras for security, mobile charging facilities, and an automatic control ambient lighting system. Moreover, a premium coach offers additional amenities such as reclining seats, coat hooks, magazine holders, and footrests.

The ticket pricing structure is designed to accommodate a wide range of passengers. Standard coach seats are priced at a modest ₹20 per ticket, while those seeking a more luxurious experience can opt for the premium coach at ₹100 per ticket.

To further facilitate passenger convenience, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has introduced Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-enabled ticket vending machines at stations. These machines allow passengers to purchase paper QR tickets and recharge the National Common Mobility Card, streamlining the ticketing process. Ticket counters at RapidX stations also provide an additional option for purchasing tickets, ensuring that passengers have convenient access to the rail service.

The launch of the RRTS and RapidX trains signifies a remarkable step forward in India’s transportation network, offering efficient, safe, and comfortable commuting options to residents of the NCR. It reflects the commitment to embracing modern technology and innovation in providing world-class transportation solutions to the public.

The inauguration of India’s first RRTS priority section is a testament to the nation’s commitment to enhancing its transportation infrastructure. The introduction of ‘Namo Bharat’ trains, the RapidX service, and state-of-the-art safety features will undoubtedly transform the way people travel in the National Capital Region. This development opens doors to more accessible, faster, and safer commuting, promising a brighter and more connected future for India.
